CHAPTER 2: FLUID APPLICATION

                  Fig.2: (a) A hydraulic jack operates by applying forces (F1, F2) to an incompressible fluid in a U-tube,
                 using a movable piston (A1, A2) on each side of the tube. (b) Hydraulic jacks are commonly used by car
                           mechanics to lift vehicles so that repairs and maintenance can be performed [3].

               From Pascal’s principle, it can be shown that the force needed to lift the car is less than the weight of the
               car:

                                                               1
                                                          1 =     2
                                                               2

               2.3 Application Concept of Manometer, Piezometer and Barometer
               2.3.1   Manometer

                       An instrument for measuring the pressure acting on a column of fluid, especially one with a U-
                       shaped tube of liquid in which a difference in the pressures acting in the two arms of the tube
                       causes the liquid to reach different heights in the two arms. Fig. 3 below illustrate how manometer
                       is working manometers. The other devices that measure pressure is piezometer and barometer [4].
