3.0 Personal Encounters and Parallel Activities
There should be time allotted for the briefing of the game as well as grouping the
participants. Coloured rubber bands can be used to mark the groups.Wrapping-up session
can be used to get feedback from participants or even to present awards to the winners. In
total, a parallel game can last between 4 to 5 hours. It is undoubtedly long but, if it is
managed well, everyone should have the time of their lives.
Hadfield, J. (1999) described games as activities with rules, goals, and elements of fun.
Koole, T. (2007) analysed students’ participation and their interaction in activities through
parallel activity in which students behave and participate concurrently with the teacher’s
activity. Koole further described that classroom interaction does not comprise a single
activity. Students engage themselves in various activities simultaneously either performing
a task individually or collaboratively and interactionally with others. Students also manage
to participate in varied activities at the same time even while displaying different ways of
participating in the activities.
Based on the core concept of parallel activity, students’ interaction, and the integration of
the four strands, the activities organised by PIS for participants in Batam, Indonesia had
been successful. This book documents various kinds of activities/games that captured
students’ attention, and motivation to improve their English proficiency.
