4.7 Arrangement of Dimensions
The arrangement of dimensions on a drawing must clearly indicate the purpose of the
design of the object. They are arranged in three ways :
1. Chain dimensioning
2. Parallel dimensioning
3. Combined dimensioning
Mainly, there are basic techniques used in technical drawing that are :
• Contour dimensioning - contours or shapes of the object are dimensioned in their
most descriptive view. For example, the radius of an arc would be dimensioned
where it appears as an arc and not as a hidden feature.

• Geometric breakdown – a part is to break the part into its geometric
configurations.
