Message Transfer Part (MTP) Layer 1 (MTP1)

Equivalent to the OSI Physical Layer.

This layer defines physical and electrical

characteristics of the signaling link.

MTP Layer 2 (MTP2)

Equivalent to the OSI Data Link Layer.
This level has a task to provide reliable transfer of

signaling messages from the source to the
destination signaling point through a signaling link

that directly connects two network nodes in the SS7
network.

MTP Layer 3 (MTP3)

Equivalent to the OSI Network Layer.

Provides functionalities for routing of signaling

messages between signaling points in SS7 network.

The routing in the SS7 network is performed by the

STP signal points.
