Telephone switching is located in the exchanges.

Switching machines provide temporary signal path

between subscribers.

Telephone set are connected through local loop to

switching machine located in the exchange.

Exchanges connected directly to local loop are

called local exchange.

Switches are hardware and/or software devices

that provides temporary connections between two

or more devices linked to the switch.
