do not require external power and can
produce an analog voltage or current.

Example; thermometer and piezoelectric.

require an external power to operate, and
the output is a measure of some variation
in passive components like resistance,
inductance or capacitance.
Example; Strain gauge,
resistance temperature
detector (RTD) and thermistor.
